The orange calico lyretail molly is a mottled form of Poecilia latipinna in warm orange broken up with black and white, finished with the long-rayed lyre tail. Calico patterning is unstable by nature, so individual fish differ noticeably and markings continue to develop with age. In a planted tank the orange reads well against green, which is much of the reason this variety stays popular.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 8 to 10 cm.
- Grazes algae from glass, wood and plants throughout the day.
- Needs genuine vegetable matter in the diet — a plant-based flake, algae wafer or blanched vegetables.
- Wants hard, alkaline water; it does poorly in soft, acidic conditions.
- Peaceful, but keep two or three females per male to spread out male attention.
- Livebearing, with fry appearing regularly in a settled tank.
They suit a hard-water community with platies, swordtails, corydoras and peaceful barbs. Keep them away from fin-nippers, which will make short work of the trailing tail rays. Aquarium fish should never be released into ponds or local waterways.
