OB stands for orange blotch, and it describes a pattern rather than a species. OB peacocks are Aulonocara lines carrying the blotching gene, which breaks the base colour into irregular dark patches over orange, blue or yellow. Because the pattern is scattered at random, no two fish are marked the same way, and unusually for peacocks the females are often patterned too. These are aquarium-developed lines, not wild fish, and that is worth knowing if you care about species purity.

Aquarium care

  • A medium-sized rift lake cichlid; give it floor space.
  • Needs hard, alkaline water.
  • Territorial, though generally calmer than mbuna.
  • Keep one male with several females, or an all-male group in a large tank.
  • Rockwork with caves over sand suits it best.
  • Quality cichlid pellets with frozen foods; avoid an over-rich diet.

A good fit for a mixed Malawi display with other peacocks and haps. Keep it out of soft-water community tanks.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current peacocks.
