Green tiger lotus (Nymphaea lotus var. viridis) grows from a bulb and unfurls broad, heart-shaped leaves marked with darker mottling. The green form holds olive to bright green colouring rather than the red of the more familiar variety, and one healthy bulb can carry the whole middle of a mid-sized aquascape.
Aquarium care
- A bulb plant. Rest the bulb on the substrate or bury it only partly, leaving the growing point exposed.
- Midground to background specimen. Allow room, because the leaves spread outward as much as upward.
- It will send long-stemmed floating leaves up to the surface. Trim those off at the base if you want the plant to stay submerged and bushy.
- Moderate to high light gives the most compact growth and the strongest leaf patterning.
- A heavy root feeder. Root tabs placed under the bulb make a visible difference.
- Benefits from CO2 but does not depend on it.
- Produces side shoots and new bulbs at the base, which can be separated once they have leaves of their own.
Best suited to aquascapers who want a single dramatic centrepiece. The shade cast beneath the leaves is welcomed by dwarf cichlids, pencilfish and other species that dislike glaring open tanks.
Plant stock rotates with each shipment, with local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the tiger lotus collection.
