Norman's lampeye killifish (Poropanchax normani, often still listed as Aplocheilus normani) is a small West African fish from slow streams and swamps. The body is a plain translucent silver-olive, and the whole point of the fish sits in the top half of the eye, which carries a patch of reflective tissue that glows electric blue-green when light strikes it from the front. In a shoal against a dark background it looks like a set of tiny lamps.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 4 cm.
  • Peaceful and easily intimidated.
  • Keep eight or more; the effect depends on numbers.
  • Wants a planted tank with gentle flow and some floating cover.
  • Feeds in the upper part of the tank.
  • Needs small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.
  • Keep the tank covered; small killifish jump.

Good in a quiet planted community with small rasboras, pygmy corydoras and ember tetras. Avoid boisterous or fast tankmates.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current killifish.
