The naso tang (Naso lituratus), sometimes called the lipstick tang, is a large Pacific surgeonfish with a grey-brown body, a bold yellow dorsal fin, orange-edged lips and bright markings around the tail. Mature males develop long trailing filaments from the tail lobes. It is a powerful cruising swimmer, and the single most important thing to understand about it is how much room it needs.
Aquarium care
- A big fish: adults commonly exceed 30 cm.
- Requires a very large, long aquarium โ not a species to grow out in a small tank and move later.
- A grazing herbivore; dried marine algae or nori should be part of the daily routine.
- Comparatively even-tempered for a tang, though still territorial toward similar-shaped fish.
- Needs strong flow and stable, well-oxygenated water.
- It does not eat corals.
Suited to a large established marine system with equally robust tankmates such as bigger wrasses, angelfish and other substantial reef fish. Buy one only if the aquarium it will live in as an adult already exists, and avoid keeping it with a second Naso unless the system is genuinely large.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the saltwater fish collection.
