Sold as the naked rasbora or Asian rummynose, this is Sawbwa resplendens — a small cyprinid found only in Inle Lake, Myanmar, and neither a rasbora nor a rummynose tetra. Males are silver-blue with a bright red snout and red tips to the tail; females are plain silver-grey with an orange spot at the tail base. The very fine scaling gives the body a smooth, almost scaleless look, which is where the naked name comes from.

Aquarium care

  • Small, around 3 to 4 cm.
  • Keep a group of eight or more, with more females than males.
  • Needs hard, alkaline water. Inle Lake is alkaline, and this species does poorly in soft, acidic blackwater tanks.
  • Prefers the cooler end of the tropical range.
  • An active mid-water swimmer that uses open space.
  • Feed small flake, micro pellets and frozen foods.

They suit a hard-water community with white cloud mountain minnows, emerald dwarf rasboras and other fish from cooler, alkaline conditions. Avoid housing them in a soft, tannin-stained setup, and avoid large or boisterous tankmates that will keep them off the food.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rasbora collection.
