Red foxtail (Myriophyllum matogrossense) is a South American milfoil carrying whorls of fine, feathery leaflets set close along an upright stem. Under strong light the growing tips take on a warm bronze to reddish cast, and a planted group moves with the current in a way that few other aquarium plants manage.

Aquarium care

  • Stem plant. Plant stems individually with a little space between them so the lower whorls are not shaded out.
  • Background, or as a soft screen behind hardscape. It grows tall and needs regular topping.
  • Moderate to high light keeps growth dense. In low light the stems stretch and shed their lower leaves.
  • Responds strongly to CO2 and a consistent fertiliser routine.
  • Propagate by cutting the top portion and replanting it, after which the remaining stem sends out side shoots.
  • Never release this plant, its trimmings or its tank water into lakes, rivers, ditches or storm drains. Several Myriophyllum species are seriously invasive where introduced. Bag trimmings for the household garbage, and do not put this plant outdoors.

Suited to planted-tank keepers who want fine texture and movement behind bolder leaf shapes. Small schooling fish sit well in front of it.

Stock rotates with each shipment and is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the myriophyllum collection.
