Metallic Green Bubble Anemone

The bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is the anemone most often kept with clownfish, and this metallic green form has tentacles that fluoresce strongly under blue light. The name comes from the bulbs that form near the tentacle tips, though a healthy anemone may drop the bubbles and stretch out long and stringy depending on light, flow and feeding. It is the most forgiving host anemone in the hobby, which is not the same thing as easy.

Aquarium care

• Needs a mature, stable reef system — six months of settled running is a fair minimum.
• Requires strong reef lighting and moderate, indirect flow.
• It moves under its own power until it finds a spot it likes, and it will sting corals it passes.
• All pump and overflow intakes must be guarded before it goes in.
• Feeds through its symbiotic algae and by taking small pieces of meaty food.
• Very sensitive to unstable salinity, temperature and water chemistry.

It suits a settled reef with clownfish and enough open rock for it to claim. It is not appropriate for a new tank, a tank without proper reef lighting, or a mixed reef packed with corals within reach. Talk to our staff about placement and lighting before buying one.
