Texture is what sets this one apart. Ludwigia brevipes carries slim, narrow leaves rather than the broad ovals of the common red stem plants, giving a fine, feathery mass when several stems grow together. It is a North American species from the southeastern United States, and it takes on orange to reddish tones at the tips under good light while the lower growth stays green. The overall effect is softer and less blocky than a stand of broad-leaved Ludwigia.
Aquarium care
- Branches readily. Cutting the top off one stem usually returns two or three.
- Plant stems a short distance apart so the fine leaves do not shade one another out.
- Light drives the orange and red tones; in a shaded tank it grows green.
- Replant the trimmed tops rather than discarding them to build up a group quickly.
- Keep the group thinned so the lower stems do not go bare.
A good mid-ground to background plant for aquascapers who want contrast in leaf shape. It works alongside small schooling fish, livebearers and peaceful dwarf cichlids.
