The long-fin zebra danio is a finnage variety of Danio rerio, the striped, restless little fish found in streams and paddy fields across South Asia. The horizontal blue and gold stripes are unchanged; the fins are drawn out into trailing veils that catch the light whenever the fish turns. They are hardy, undemanding and almost always on the move.

Aquarium care

  • Swimming length matters more than volume, so a long tank beats a tall one.
  • Keep six or more. Danios kept singly turn skittish and pester their tankmates.
  • Tolerant of cooler, room-temperature tanks and a wide range of water chemistry.
  • Accepts flake, micro pellets and frozen foods, feeding at the surface and in mid-water.
  • The long-finned form swims more slowly than the standard fish and can be nipped, including by its own kind, so watch the group.
  • A lid is sensible; they jump.

A good fit for an active, unfussy community of similarly sized peaceful fish. Skip pairing them with slow, long-finned tankmates such as bettas or fancy guppies. Zebra danios have established wild populations in some warm regions, so aquarium fish should never be released into a pond, ditch or waterway.

Stock rotates, and local pickup is available at our Lethbridge store. More in danios.
