Rice paddy herb (Limnophila aromatica) is a Southeast Asian marsh plant that has become a well-liked red-purple stem plant in the hobby. Whorls of narrow, finely serrated leaves sit along an upright stem, green on top and flushing purple to burgundy underneath once it is given enough light.

Aquarium care

  • Stem plant. Plant stems individually with a small gap between them.
  • Background placement. It grows straight up and is usually shown as a group of several stems together.
  • High light is what brings out the purple undersides. Under moderate light it grows perfectly well but stays green.
  • CO2 and regular water column fertilising improve both the growth rate and the colour.
  • Propagate by topping the stem and replanting the cut tips.
  • It grows readily emersed as well, so plants may arrive in emersed form and take a few weeks to convert to submerged leaves.

Suited to aquarists who have a little planted-tank experience behind them and want colour without moving to the most demanding species. It makes a good backdrop for small schooling fish and dwarf cichlids.

Stock rotates with each shipment, with local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the limnophila collection.
