Limnophila aquatica is the largest of the ambulias, producing broad whorls of very finely cut leaves that can open out to the width of a hand on a well-grown stem. Given room and light it is among the more impressive background plants available. Crowded into a small tank it just looks untidy, so it needs a bit of planning.

Aquarium care

  • Stem plant: plant stems individually with plenty of space, since the whorls are wide.
  • Needs strong light for the whorls to open fully, and in dim tanks the leaves stay tight and small.
  • Responds strongly to CO2 and to steady water column fertilising.
  • Propagate by topping and replanting, after which the remaining stem usually side-shoots.
  • Best in a tall tank, as it grows upward quickly and reaches the surface.

As with other Limnophila, never release the plant or its trimmings into a waterway, pond, ditch or storm drain, and put surplus growth in the household waste instead. In the aquarium it makes a soft, feathery background for tetras, rasboras, gouramis and other peaceful community fish.

Stock rotates, and plants are sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the Limnophila collection.
