Giant ambulia (Limnophila aquatica) forms broad whorls of finely divided, bright green leaves spiralling around a thick upright stem. Mature stems can carry rosettes as wide as a hand, and a group of them makes a soft feathery wall that sets off broad-leaved plants nicely.

Aquarium care

  • Stem plant. Space the stems generously, because crowded ambulia shades itself and thins out at the base.
  • Background plant. It grows tall and quickly, so plan on topping it regularly.
  • Moderate to high light keeps the whorls wide and full.
  • Not demanding of CO2, though growth is faster and denser when it is provided.
  • Propagate by cutting the top and replanting it. The lower stem then produces side shoots.
  • A hungry plant, which makes it useful for soaking up surplus nutrients in a newly set-up tank.

Best in larger tanks with the depth to carry a plant of this size. The dense whorls give fry and shy fish somewhere to hide, so it works well in livebearer tanks and in community setups where something is always being chased.

Stock rotates with each shipment and is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the limnophila collection.
