The Rio Itenez bristlenose, catalogued as L519, is an Ancistrus from the Rio Itenez on the Bolivia-Brazil border. Like other bristlenose it has the flattened body, broad suckermouth and, in mature males, the crown of fleshy snout tentacles that give the group its name. The appeal of this particular one is the finer, more contrasted spotting and the pale fin edging, which are noticeably crisper than on the standard brown bristlenose.

Aquarium care

  • A small to medium bristlenose that stays well within the size of a normal home tank.
  • Peaceful with other species; males hold territory against each other.
  • Largely herbivorous: algae wafers and blanched vegetables.
  • Real driftwood is required; bristlenose rasp on wood as part of their diet.
  • Needs a cave to shelter in through the day.
  • Bottom-dweller that grazes glass and hardscape.

It does the same job as a common bristlenose in a peaceful community tank, with better markings. Give each male its own cave if you keep more than one, and expect to see it most in the evening.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the current plecos.
