The yellow king tiger pleco is a Hypancistrus from the Rio Xingu in Brazil, known in the hobby by its L-number, L333. The body is dark with a fine network of pale yellow to cream lines and spots, and the pattern varies noticeably between individuals, so no two fish are quite alike. It is a small, slow-growing catfish from fast, warm, oxygen-rich river water, and it is prized more for the markings than for any work it does in the tank.

Aquarium care

  • Stays small: roughly 12 cm.
  • Needs strong flow and high dissolved oxygen.
  • Provide caves; each fish will claim one and defend it.
  • Carnivorous rather than herbivorous. Feed frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and sinking carnivore pellets.
  • Shy and largely nocturnal.
  • Bottom-dweller.

This is a fish for an established tank and an attentive keeper, not a beginner's algae crew. It will not clean your glass. Keep it with calm mid-water fish that will not strip the sinking food before it emerges, and be patient about seeing it during the day.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the current plecos.
