The angelicus pleco is one of the Hypancistrus catfish of the Rio Demini, in the Rio Negro system of northern Brazil, and it is catalogued in the hobby as L136B. The pattern is the appeal: a dark brown to near-black body scattered with rounded cream or white spots that stand out sharply under any light. It is a small, retiring fish that spends the day wedged into a cave and comes out to feed once the tank lights are off.

Aquarium care

  • Stays small for a pleco, at roughly 8 to 12 cm.
  • Shy and largely nocturnal; give it caves, tubes and shaded hardscape.
  • Peaceful towards other species, but males hold territory against each other.
  • Carnivorous rather than herbivorous. It prefers frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and sinking carnivore pellets over algae wafers.
  • Wants clean, well-oxygenated water with some movement.
  • Bottom-dweller.

This is not an algae eater and should not be bought as one. It suits a quiet, well-maintained tank with small to medium peaceful tankmates, where it will not be outcompeted for sinking food. Provide one cave per fish if you keep more than one.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current plecos.
