The clown pleco (Panaqolus maccus, catalogued as L104) is a small Venezuelan catfish banded in cream and dark brown, with the bands running at an angle across a stocky, blunt-headed body. It is one of the true wood-eating plecos, and that single fact governs how it must be kept: without a piece of real driftwood to rasp at, it will not do well no matter what else is on the menu.
Aquarium care
- Small: adults reach roughly 9 to 10 cm.
- Real driftwood is essential, not decorative.
- Also takes algae wafers, blanched courgette and sinking vegetable foods.
- Peaceful and shy; provide caves and shaded cover.
- Most active after the lights go out.
- Bottom-dweller.
Its small adult size makes it one of the few plecos that suits a tank in the 100 to 150 litre range, and it fits well with tetras, rasboras, corydoras and dwarf cichlids. It grazes some algae but is not an efficient algae eater, so buy it because you want the fish rather than the labour.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See what else is in on our pleco page.
