The kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a slim, eel-shaped loach from the leaf-littered forest streams of Indonesia and Malaysia. The body is a warm salmon-brown crossed by a dozen or so dark saddles, and the fish moves by wriggling along the bottom or through plant roots rather than swimming in open water. It spends the day buried in sand or wedged under wood, and comes out to forage in the evening.

Aquarium care

  • A small, slender loach that stays modest in size.
  • Peaceful and completely harmless to other fish.
  • Keep six or more. Singles stay hidden permanently.
  • Needs soft sand, not gravel, so it can burrow without damaging its barbels.
  • Wants wood, leaf litter and shaded cover, and dim light suits it.
  • A bottom-dweller. Feed sinking pellets, wafers and frozen bloodworm after lights out.
  • Keep the tank covered and filter intakes screened; they find gaps.

Good company for tetras, rasboras, corydoras and dwarf gouramis in a planted tank. Avoid anything large and predatory, and avoid sharp gravel more than anything else.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current loach and botia list.
