Kordon Malachite Green-118mL

Malachite green is a classic dye treatment for external protozoan parasites and for fungus on fish and eggs, supplied here as Kordon's zinc-free solution.

Key features

• Used against ich in fresh water and its marine equivalent, along with other external protozoans such as Costia, Chilodonella and Trichodina.
• Also long used against fungal growth on eggs, a use with a substantial track record among breeders.
• Supplied as a zinc-free chloride solution, the form generally preferred for aquarium use.

Important cautions

• Lethal to invertebrates. Keep it away from shrimp, snails, corals, anemones and live rock entirely.
• Scaleless fish, including loaches, many catfish and elephant noses, are notably sensitive. The label sets out reduced dosing for them; follow it rather than guessing at a fraction.
• Remove activated carbon before dosing, or it will pull the dye straight back out. Put fresh carbon back after the course to clear residual colour.
• It stains silicone, decor, rockwork, clothing and skin, so a bare hospital tank is the sensible place to use it.
• Dose rates and repeat intervals are printed on the bottle. Follow them, and resist overdosing in the hope of a faster result.
