The King Koopa nerite is one of the horned nerite snails, a small group of Neritina species from Southeast Asian streams that carry short spines projecting from the shell whorl. This one pairs those horns with a boldly banded olive and black shell, and at well under 2 cm it is among the smaller snails we carry. It works the same way every nerite does, grinding steadily across glass, rock and driftwood and taking algae film off surfaces as it goes.
Aquarium care
- Small: usually under 2 cm.
- Completely peaceful and safe with healthy plants.
- Grazes algae and biofilm; supplement with an algae wafer in a spotless tank.
- Calcium in the water helps keep the shell and the horns intact.
- Will not reproduce in a freshwater aquarium.
- Keep the tank covered, as nerites wander above the waterline.
It suits nano tanks, shrimp tanks and planted community aquariums. The horns are fragile and can chip on sharp hardscape, so smooth wood and rounded stone show the animal off better. Avoid keeping it with loaches or pufferfish, which eat snails.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current snails.
