Hydrocotyle Verticillata

Whorled marsh pennywort (Hydrocotyle verticillata) is a creeping marsh plant with small round leaves held flat on top of upright stalks, each joined to a horizontal runner threading through the substrate. The result is a scatter of little green discs rather than a solid mass, which makes it handy for breaking up a hard foreground line.

Aquarium care

• Creeping plant: lay the runner along the substrate and pin it or lightly bury it, leaving the leaf stalks free.
• Propagate by cutting the runner between plantlets.
• It is a marsh plant and will happily grow emersed, pushing leaves above the waterline in open-topped tanks and paludariums.
• Good light keeps it low and compact, while in shade the stalks stretch upward.
• Grows without CO2, though it spreads faster with it.
• Also works attached to wood, or simply left to creep over hardscape.

Versatile enough for planted community tanks, shrimp tanks, nano layouts and riparium-style setups. Small peaceful fish and shrimp suit it best, and large plant-grazing fish do not.
