HMPK stands for halfmoon plakat: a short-finned betta (Betta splendens) that still opens its tail to the full half-circle spread of a halfmoon. The koi part refers to the pattern — irregular patches of red, orange, black and white, named after the carp it resembles. Koi bettas carry the marble gene, so the pattern is not fixed: a fish you buy today will look different in six months, which is normal rather than a fault.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches about 6 to 7 cm.
  • A tropical fish. It needs a heater, not a room-temperature bowl.
  • A heated, filtered tank of around 19 L or more suits one fish.
  • Males must be kept one to a tank; two males will fight.
  • Breathes atmospheric air through a labyrinth organ, so it must always be able to reach the surface.
  • Insectivorous — feed a quality betta pellet with frozen bloodworm or daphnia.
  • A jumper. Keep the tank covered with only a small air gap.

The short plakat finnage means this form swims strongly and copes with more flow than a long-finned betta. Suitable tankmates in a larger tank include corydoras, otocinclus and snails; avoid guppies and other flowing-finned fish, which a betta may target.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the betta collection.
