Big ear, sometimes sold as dumbo, describes a betta (Betta splendens) whose pectoral fins have been selectively enlarged until they fan out well beyond the body like a pair of wings. On this golden halfmoon plakat the pale, translucent pectorals sit against a warm metallic gold body, and the fish flares them constantly as it moves. The short plakat tail keeps the rest of the finnage manageable, so the ears remain the feature rather than competing with a heavy tail.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 6 to 7 cm.
- Needs a heated, filtered tank of around 19 L or more.
- Keep flow gentle โ the oversized pectorals catch current.
- One male per tank; males will fight on sight.
- Requires surface access to breathe atmospheric air.
- Feed a quality betta pellet with frozen bloodworm or daphnia.
- The enlarged pectorals are delicate and tear on sharp decor and rough ornaments.
Suits a single-fish tank or a calm community with corydoras, otocinclus and snails. Choose smooth wood, silk or live plants over hard plastic ornaments. Avoid nippy tankmates entirely, since the pectorals are an obvious target.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the betta collection.
