A rosetail is a halfmoon betta (Betta splendens) in which the fin rays branch so many times that the edges ruffle and overlap, giving the tail the layered look of a rose. It is the most extravagant finnage in the hobby, with a trade-off worth stating plainly: heavy branched fins tire the fish, and rosetails are more prone to fin damage and fin biting than simpler forms.
Aquarium care
- Reaches about 6 to 7 cm in the body, with the fins adding considerably.
- Keep flow low — a heavy-finned betta works hard against a current.
- Needs a heated, filtered tank of around 19 L or more.
- Resting spots near the surface, such as broad leaves or a betta hammock, are genuinely used.
- Smooth decor only; rough ornaments shred the fin edges.
- Feed a betta pellet with frozen foods, and avoid overfeeding a fish that swims little.
- One male per tank.
Best kept alone or with quiet bottom dwellers such as corydoras and snails. Fin-nipping species are out of the question. Some rosetails bite their own fins; if that happens, look first at water quality, flow and boredom rather than assuming disease.
