Harlequin Rasbora

The harlequin rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha) is a Southeast Asian fish from the peat swamps and slow streams of Malaysia, Thailand and Sumatra. It has been a community-tank staple for close to a century. The body is a warm copper-pink and carries a solid black triangle across the rear half, broad at the front and tapering into the tail. In a group the triangles line up as the fish turn together, which is the whole point of keeping them in numbers.

Aquarium care

• Reaches about 4.5 cm.
• Peaceful and undemanding.
• A schooling fish. Keep eight or more.
• Colours up best in soft, slightly acidic water over a dark substrate, though it adapts well.
• Swims in the middle of the tank.
• Omnivorous: small flake, micro pellets, frozen daphnia and bloodworm.

One of the easiest schooling fish to place. It works with tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, dwarf gouramis and small loaches, and it is calm enough not to bother shrimp of a reasonable size.
