The green tiger barb is a dark colour form of Puntigrus tetrazona. Selective breeding has spread the black banding across the whole body, so instead of four bars on gold you get a fish that reads as bottle green with a metallic sheen, and orange-red fins that stand out sharply against it. Under good light the green shifts towards blue at certain angles. The shape, size and temperament are exactly those of the ordinary tiger barb.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches about 7 cm.
  • Lively and assertive, and inclined to nip fins in small groups.
  • Keep eight or more.
  • Needs clear swimming space with planting at the margins.
  • Spends its time in the middle of the tank.
  • Omnivorous and not fussy: flake, pellets and frozen foods.

Green, albino and standard tiger barbs will shoal together, and a mixed group of all three is a common way to keep them. Pair them with danios, rainbowfish and other fast, short-finned tankmates rather than with long-finned or slow-moving species.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rest of the current barbs.
