The green neon tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is the smallest of the three Paracheirodon species and comes from the blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro and Orinoco. It looks like a neon tetra that has been rinsed of most of its red: the blue-green stripe runs the full length of the body and is brighter and more turquoise than a neon's, while the red is reduced to a small smudge near the tail or absent altogether. In a large shoal the effect is a moving line of green light.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches about 2.5 cm, smaller than a neon tetra.
  • Peaceful and easily intimidated.
  • Keep a large group, twelve or more, in a well-planted tank.
  • Wants soft, acidic, warm blackwater conditions and is less forgiving than a neon.
  • Mid-water swimmer.
  • Needs small foods: crushed flake, micro pellets, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.

Best in a dedicated blackwater or nano planted tank with pygmy corydoras, chili rasboras and other small, quiet fish. It is not a beginner's tetra and does poorly in a tank that has not fully matured.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current tetras.
