Green chromis (Chromis viridis) are small shoaling damselfish from Indo-Pacific reefs, pale green-blue with a sheen that shifts as they turn through the light. They are one of the few genuinely peaceful damsels, hardy, inexpensive and often used to bring movement to the open water above a reef. One thing worth knowing before you buy: shoals kept in aquariums frequently reduce themselves over time as a dominant fish pushes the others out, so plan for that rather than being caught out by it.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 8 cm.
  • Shoaling โ€” start with six or more and give them open swimming space.
  • Hardy and undemanding by marine standards.
  • Spends most of its time in open water above the rockwork.
  • Takes flake, pellets and frozen foods eagerly.
  • Does not pick at corals or ornamental invertebrates.

They suit a medium to large reef or fish-only tank alongside clownfish, cardinalfish, gobies and other calm marine stock. Avoid housing them with large predatory fish, and give the group enough room that the pecking order does not turn into a corner brawl.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See more in the saltwater fish collection.
