The golden honey gourami is a selectively bred line of Trichogaster chuna, a small labyrinth fish from India and Bangladesh. Where the wild male turns deep honey-orange with a black throat in breeding condition, this line holds an even pale gold across the whole body and fins, with no dark markings at all. It is a genuinely gentle fish, which sets it apart from the dwarf gourami it is often confused with in shops.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 5 cm, smaller than a dwarf gourami.
  • Peaceful, including towards its own kind, so a small group is fine.
  • Timid at first; wants planting and floating cover to feel secure.
  • A labyrinth fish, so leave an air gap between the water and the lid.
  • Spends its time in the middle and upper levels.
  • Omnivorous: small flake, micro pellets, frozen daphnia and bloodworm.

One of the better centrepiece fish for a small planted community, alongside rasboras, small tetras, corydoras and kuhli loaches. Keep it away from fin-nipping barbs and boisterous fish generally.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
