The glowlight danio (Danio choprae) is a small, brightly marked cyprinid from fast, clear hill streams in northern Myanmar. Over a copper-gold body it carries a series of turquoise vertical bars and a bright orange stripe running back toward the tail, with orange marking the fins as well. It is a naturally occurring fish rather than a fluorescent or dyed variety, and the name simply describes how it looks under good light.

Aquarium care

  • Small, around 3 cm.
  • Shoaling — keep eight to ten or more; small groups are nervous and pale.
  • Comes from moving water, so it appreciates good flow and high oxygen.
  • Comfortable at the cooler end of the tropical range.
  • An active jumper — keep the tank covered.
  • Feed small flake, micro pellets and frozen foods.

They suit a planted community with other small, active fish — other danios, small barbs, corydoras and peaceful rasboras. They are busy fish and are a poor match for slow, long-finned tankmates or for warm-water species like discus that need the temperature kept high.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the danio collection.
