Glo sharks are fluorescent forms of the rainbow shark (Epalzeorhynchos frenatum), a Southeast Asian cyprinid with a torpedo body and a high, upright dorsal fin. The colour is produced by an inherited fluorescent protein gene, so the fish are bred that way and pass it on — they are not dyed or injected. This is an assorted listing and the colours available change from shipment to shipment, so ask our staff what is in the tank.
Aquarium care
- Reaches roughly 15 cm.
- Territorial, and increasingly so with age, particularly toward its own kind and other bottom-dwelling shark-shaped fish.
- Keep one per tank unless the aquarium is genuinely large with broken sight lines.
- Needs a long tank with caves, wood and hiding places to claim.
- Grazes algae and takes sinking pellets and wafers.
- A jumper, so keep the tank covered.
Suits a larger community with barbs, danios, rainbowfish and larger rasboras. Avoid slow, long-finned tankmates that cannot get away from it. As genetically modified ornamental fish, glo sharks must never be released into any waterway, canal or storm pond; rehome unwanted fish instead.
