Glo Betta

Glo bettas are fluorescent forms of Betta splendens. The colour comes from an inherited fluorescent protein gene, so these fish are bred that way and pass it to their offspring — they are not dyed, painted or injected, which is a fair question and one we would rather answer directly. Under white light they read as an intense solid colour; under blue or actinic lighting the fluorescence is far more obvious. Colours available change from shipment to shipment.

Aquarium care

• Reaches about 6 to 7 cm.
• Care is identical to any other betta — a heater is essential.
• A filtered tank of around 19 L or more with gentle flow.
• One male per tank.
• Needs surface access to breathe atmospheric air.
• Feed a quality betta pellet with frozen bloodworm or daphnia.

Suits a single-fish tank or a calm community with corydoras, otocinclus and snails; avoid guppies and other long-finned fish. Because these are genetically modified ornamental fish, they must never be released into any pond, waterway or storm drain, and unwanted fish should be returned to a shop or rehomed rather than let go.
