Glo Barb-Green

This is a tiger barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) from a GloFish line, carrying an inherited fluorescent protein that turns the body a vivid green. The familiar four dark bars are still there, showing through the colour, and the fish looks brightest over dark substrate or under blue-leaning light. Temperament is pure tiger barb — quick, confident and almost never still.

Aquarium care

• Grows to about 7 cm.
• A shoaling species; groups of eight or more spread the pushing and shoving within the group rather than onto neighbours.
• A known fin-nipper, so choose tankmates that can keep up with it.
• Occupies the middle of the water column and swims constantly.
• Warm, well-oxygenated water with steady filtration; tolerant of a wide hardness range.
• Accepts flake, micro-pellets and frozen foods without fuss.

Good company includes other tiger barbs, cherry barbs, zebra danios, rainbowfish and bottom-dwellers such as loaches or corydoras. Keep them well away from bettas, angelfish, gouramis and fancy guppies. Aquarium fish should never be released into local waterways or ponds.
