The redhook silver dollar (Myloplus rubripinnis) is a tall, disc-shaped characin from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, bright silver with a distinctive red, hook-shaped anal fin that gives it its name. It is the largest of the silver dollars commonly sold and a genuinely impressive shoaling fish in a big tank, moving as a group in a way smaller schooling fish cannot match at that size.

Aquarium care

  • Grows large, commonly 25 to 30 cm, and deep-bodied with it.
  • Shoaling — keep five or more, or they become nervous and skittish.
  • Needs a tall as well as long aquarium to accommodate the body shape.
  • A committed herbivore. It will strip live plants, so plan for artificial planting or accept the loss.
  • Feed vegetable-based foods, blanched vegetables and algae wafers alongside quality pellets.
  • Easily startled — sudden movement near the tank can send the group into the glass.

They suit a large aquarium with other big, peaceful South American fish such as large catfish and calm cichlids. They are not a planted-tank fish, and they are far too large for a standard community. Keep the tank in a calm part of the room if you can.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the freshwater fish collection.
