The German blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small South American dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco basin, patterned in gold, blue and violet with a black bar through the eye and a raised black spine at the front of the dorsal fin. For its size it has an outsized personality — pairs form bonds, defend a patch of substrate and behave far more like a large cichlid than a community fish. It is also a fish that punishes an unstable tank.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach around 5 cm.
  • Needs warmer water than most community fish, at the upper end of the tropical range.
  • Very sensitive to nitrate and to unstable conditions; a mature, well-maintained tank is essential.
  • Peaceful with other species, but a breeding pair will hold a territory near the bottom.
  • Prefers soft to moderately hard water with gentle flow and some cover.
  • Takes quality flake, micro-pellets and frozen foods.

Best in a settled planted tank with small tetras, rasboras, corydoras and other calm fish that can live at the same warm temperature. Avoid boisterous or nippy tankmates. Do not put rams into a newly cycled tank — it is the single most common reason they fail.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the dwarf cichlid collection.
