The gardneri killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri, long listed as Aphyosemion gardneri) comes from small streams and seasonal pools in Nigeria and Cameroon. Males are heavily marked in metallic blue-green with rows of dark red spots and yellow or white edging on the fins, and there are several distinct locality strains with quite different colouring. Females are plain fawn. Unlike some killifish it is not an annual species, so it lives a reasonable length of time in an aquarium.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 6 cm.
- Males spar with one another, so keep one male with two or more females.
- Wants soft, gently filtered water with dense planting and shaded areas.
- Feeds in the upper half of the tank.
- Prefers frozen and live foods, though most will take quality flake.
- A determined jumper. A tight-fitting lid is essential.
Best in a small species tank or a quiet planted setup with calm bottom-dwellers. Boisterous community fish will outcompete it and stress the males.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current killifish.
