Galaxy Rasbora / Celestial Pearl Danios

The celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus), still widely sold as the galaxy rasbora, was only described in 2007 after being found in shallow, heavily vegetated ponds in the Shan State of Myanmar. It is tiny, deep-bodied for its length, and covered in pale pearl spots over a dark blue-grey ground, with red-orange bands in the dorsal, anal and tail fins. Males are the more strongly marked; females are rounder and softer in colour.

Aquarium care

• Reaches roughly 2 cm, making it a true nano fish.
• Peaceful, though males display and spar harmlessly among themselves.
• Keep a group of eight or more, with several females.
• Wants dense planting and quiet water. It hides in an open tank.
• Feeds in the lower and middle levels.
• Needs small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.

Best in a small planted tank of its own or with other nano species such as chili rasboras, pygmy corydoras and ember tetras. Anything large or fast-moving will simply intimidate it out of sight.
