The galaxy platy is a colour form of Xiphophorus maculatus, a small livebearer from the fresh waters of Mexico and Central America. The galaxy name refers to the fine light speckling scattered over a darker base, usually with orange showing through the fins and along the flanks. Platies are among the easiest community fish to keep well: small, undemanding, active without being frantic, and always visible.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach around 5 to 6 cm.
- A 60 L tank comfortably suits a small group.
- Prefers hard, alkaline water, which most Alberta tap water supplies without adjustment.
- Peaceful and non-territorial, and a reasonable first fish for a new keeper.
- Omnivorous; takes flake, micro-pellets and frozen foods, and appreciates some vegetable content.
- Livebearing, so a mixed group produces fry regularly.
They suit a community tank with mollies, swordtails, corydoras, peaceful barbs and larger rasboras. Keep two or three females per male so females are not pestered. Never release aquarium fish into local waterways or a garden pond.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the platy collection.
