The fusco hap (Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus) is a large Lake Malawi predator marked with irregular dark blotches over a pale body — camouflage for an ambush hunter that lies still near the substrate and waits. Mature males develop blue and gold over the head and flanks. It is an impressive fish with a straightforward requirement: space, and tankmates it cannot eat.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 25 cm.
- Needs a large aquarium with a long footprint and powerful filtration.
- A predator of smaller fish; stock only with cichlids of comparable size.
- Wants hard, alkaline water with stable parameters.
- Provide rockwork and some open substrate for it to lie over.
- Feeds well on quality pellets and frozen foods.
Best in a large Malawi tank with other big haplochromines. It is not a fish for a mixed peacock tank, a mbuna tank, or anything with small fish in it. Talk to our staff about tank size before buying, since juveniles look far more accommodating than the adult turns out to be.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the haplochromis collection.
