The foxface rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) pairs a lemon-yellow body with a boldly marked black-and-white face, and the long tapered snout it feeds with is what earned the name. It comes from Indo-Pacific reefs and lagoons, where it works over filamentous algae in loose groups.
Aquarium care
- The dorsal spines are venomous. Net and handle with care, and tell anyone else who works in the tank.
- Give it a large, established marine aquarium with open swimming space and rock to browse over.
- Feed a mostly herbivorous diet: dried marine algae, herbivore pellets and frozen preparations with real plant content.
- It often shifts into a blotchy brown camouflage pattern at night or when startled. This is normal and passes.
- Many individuals ignore corals, but some nip soft corals and zoanthids, especially if underfed, so it is not reliably reef safe.
- Usually peaceful toward unrelated fish; keep one per tank unless the system is very large.
A practical algae grazer for a roomy fish-only setup, or for a mixed reef where the keeper accepts some risk to softies. Tangs, wrasses, clownfish and larger damsels make sensible company. Avoid pairing it with aggressive fish that will keep it wedged in the rocks.
Availability rotates through the year. Local pickup at our Lethbridge store, with more species in saltwater fish.
