Rinse before you replace

This is the pad you should be reluctant to throw away. The bacteria colonising it are doing the ammonia and nitrite conversion for the tank, so rinse it in old aquarium water and squeeze it out rather than swapping it on a schedule. Replace it only when the foam has broken down and no longer springs back. This is not the two-layer poly/foam insert, which is a separate item listed in a three-pack.
