Fluval BioMax

Porous ceramic rings that give nitrifying bacteria somewhere permanent to live, turning filter space into biological capacity.

Key features

• A network of pores runs right through each ring, so colonisation is not limited to the outside surface
• Ring shape keeps water moving between the pieces instead of compacting into a solid, flow-blocking mass
• Houses the bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate, the process a cycled tank depends on
• Loose media that can be loaded into any filter with room for it, including Fluval canister baskets and media bags

Using it

BioMax works best behind the mechanical stages, where the water reaching it is already free of coarse debris. Rinse it gently in used tank water if it becomes silted, never under the tap, and if you decide to refresh it, replace part of the volume at a time rather than all of it. The bacteria living on the old rings are the ones keeping ammonia at zero.

Foam and polishing media to sit in front of it are in External Media. Available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store.
