The Usisya flavescent peacock is a regional variant of Aulonocara stuartgranti, also listed in the trade as A. steveni, collected around Usisya on the western shore of Lake Malawi. Males carry blue over the head and flanks with yellow through the body and fins; females are a plain grey-brown. Peacocks hunt by hovering over open sand and detecting small invertebrates moving beneath it, which is why the substrate matters as much as the rockwork.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach roughly 13 cm.
  • Provide a sand bed — it is how this fish naturally feeds.
  • Needs hard, alkaline water with good filtration.
  • Keep one male with several females; rival males fight.
  • Less aggressive than mbuna, and easily bullied by them.
  • Takes quality pellets and frozen foods; avoid overly rich diets.

Best in a Malawi tank with other peacocks and calmer haps of similar size. Different Aulonocara species and variants hybridise readily, so if the colour form matters to you, keep only one peacock type. Do not mix them with mbuna or with small community fish.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the peacock cichlid collection.
