The flame tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus), also called the von Rio tetra, comes from coastal streams around Rio de Janeiro. The front half of the body is silvery and marked with two short dark vertical bars behind the gill cover, and the rear half and fins shade into a warm red-orange. Males are the more intense fish. It is an undemanding tetra that has stayed popular for decades because it is genuinely easy to keep.
Aquarium care
- Small, around 4 cm.
- Shoaling — keep eight or more.
- Tolerates a wide range of water conditions, which makes it forgiving for a newer keeper.
- Colours strongly over dark substrate in a planted tank; it looks washed out in a bare bright one.
- Takes flake, micro pellets and frozen foods readily.
- Peaceful, and not a notable fin-nipper by tetra standards.
They suit a peaceful planted community with corydoras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other small tetras. The species is under pressure in its native range, and almost all aquarium stock is captive bred. Avoid keeping them with fish large enough to eat them or fast enough to take every meal.
