Flame Moss (Taxiphyllum 'Flame')

Flame moss (Taxiphyllum 'Flame') is unusual among aquarium mosses in that it grows upward rather than spreading sideways, producing twisting vertical fronds that really do resemble a green flame. That growth habit makes it one of the more useful mosses for aquascaping, because it adds height and movement to hardscape instead of just softening it.

Growing it in your tank

• Attach it to wood or rock with cotton thread or gel glue; it does not need substrate.
• Grows vertically, so give it a surface where the upward shape can be seen.
• Tolerates low to moderate light. Very bright light tends to bring algae rather than better growth.
• Slow growing and undemanding once established.
• Prefers gentle flow and stable water; it dislikes being moved repeatedly.
• Trim the tops to keep the flame shape dense.

It suits nano aquascapes, shrimp tanks and planted community tanks with small peaceful fish. Dwarf shrimp will graze biofilm from it without damaging it. Avoid it in tanks with goldfish, large cichlids or anything else that uproots and shreds plants.
