The flagtail prochilodus (Semaprochilodus insignis) is a silver Amazonian characin whose tail and fins are boldly banded in black and orange-red — the flag that gives it its name. In the wild it is a migratory shoaling fish that grazes algae and detritus from submerged surfaces, and it keeps that behaviour in an aquarium, working over rock, wood and glass with a soft, downturned mouth.

Aquarium care

  • Grows large, commonly past 30 cm.
  • Needs a very large tank with strong flow and high oxygen levels.
  • A grazer, not a predator — vegetable matter must be a genuine part of the diet.
  • Offer algae wafers, blanched vegetables and quality prepared foods alongside a mature grazing surface.
  • Shoaling. Kept singly or in twos it tends to become quarrelsome; a group settles better.
  • Sensitive to poor water quality, and a capable jumper, so keep the tank covered.

It suits a large aquarium with other big, peaceful South American fish — large catfish, silver dollars, calm cichlids. It is not a candidate for a standard community tank, and it will strip a planted display of soft-leaved plants.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the assorted and interesting collection.
