The figure 8 puffer (Dichotomyctere ocellatus) is a small, expressive pufferfish from the estuaries and lower river reaches of Malaysia, Borneo and Thailand. The yellow-olive back is marked with dark rings and loops, some of which read as a figure of eight, and the pale belly is unmarked. It watches the room, follows people across the glass and has far more personality than its size suggests.
Aquarium care
- Stays small, around 8 cm.
- Comes from brackish water and is generally kept in low-salinity brackish conditions as it matures. Ask our staff how the fish in store is being kept.
- Its teeth grow continuously and must be worn down on hard-shelled food such as ramshorn or pond snails.
- Curious and pushy, and a known fin-nipper.
- Scaleless, so it is sensitive to copper and to some medications.
- A messy eater that needs strong filtration and consistent water changes.
Most people do best keeping figure 8 puffers on their own or in a dedicated brackish setup. They are not suited to a planted freshwater community, and long-finned or slow tankmates will be nipped. Plan a steady supply of snails before you buy one.
