The fantail is one of the more forgiving fancy goldfish varieties (Carassius auratus): a rounded, egg-shaped body with a paired, forked tail held out behind it. This is an assorted listing, so colour varies from shipment to shipment — orange, red and white, calico and mixed fish all turn up, and we would rather you chose from what is in the tank than expected a particular fish.
Aquarium care
- A coldwater fish. It needs no heater in a normally heated room.
- Grows larger than most people expect, commonly to 15 cm or more in the body.
- Produces a lot of waste, so oversized filtration and generous water changes matter more than decor.
- Not a bowl fish, and not suited to a small unfiltered tank.
- The twin-tailed body swims less efficiently than a single-tailed goldfish, so keep flow moderate.
- Feed sinking pellets and vegetable matter; floating food encourages gulped air and buoyancy trouble.
Keep fantails with other fancy goldfish of similar size and swimming ability. Single-tailed goldfish such as comets will simply outcompete them at feeding time. Goldfish are invasive where introduced in Canada, so never release one into a pond, stormwater basin, canal or waterway.
