Ember Tetra

The ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae) is a tiny fish from the Araguaia basin in central Brazil, and it is very nearly the smallest tetra in the trade. There is no pattern to speak of, just a warm translucent orange over the whole body that glows against green planting and dark substrate. A shoal of twenty in a nano tank costs less and looks better than almost anything else you could put in the same space.

Aquarium care

• Very small: adults reach around 2 cm.
• Peaceful and completely harmless to tankmates.
• Keep ten or more. In small numbers they hide and stay pale.
• Prefers soft, acidic water and gentle flow.
• Swims in the middle and lower-middle of the tank.
• Needs small food: crushed flake, micro pellets, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.

Embers are one of the few fish small enough to keep alongside adult dwarf shrimp without much concern, and they suit heavily planted nano tanks, dwarf cichlid setups and quiet community aquariums. Anything with a large mouth will treat them as food, so keep the tankmates small.
