The electric blue ram is a line-bred colour form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi in which the usual gold and violet patterning is replaced by an even metallic blue across almost the whole fish. It is a striking animal in a planted tank, and it comes with a caveat that we would rather state up front: heavily line-bred rams are, as a group, less hardy than standard German blue rams and less forgiving of an imperfect tank.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach around 5 cm.
- Needs warm water toward the upper end of the tropical range.
- Requires a mature, stable, well-maintained aquarium; nitrate and instability are the usual killers.
- Peaceful toward other species, though pairs defend a small patch of the bottom.
- Prefers gentle flow, soft to moderately hard water and plenty of cover.
- Takes quality flake, micro-pellets and frozen foods.
Best in an established planted tank with small tetras, rasboras, corydoras and other quiet fish comfortable at the same temperature. Do not add one to a tank that has been running for a few weeks. Ask our staff about acclimation before you take one home.
